On all the time. I'm replacing the bulb on at least one of them every year. Gets kind expensive. Wish these tings lasted longer or I could find them cheaper. Just paid $37 for one yesterday, lasted a year.
During the day it is High Beam and spots. At night it is low beam and spots. Yes you have to do a little wiring change but search on here and you will find some easy step by step instructions. Note in some states it is illegal to have highs and spots or to use high during the day but I doubt you would every get written up for it. In my mind it is worth the chance.
I was pulled over once (just recently) in the middle of the day and asked if I had my highs on. I said yes and he told me to turn them off. I was talking to a buddy that is a motorcycle cop and he said don't worry about it.
