I have a 2008 SG that i've had about 6 months. I've heard this gravel hitting the front fender sound 3 or 4 times. Each time I stop to check things out and can't find anything. When I ride on I don't hear it any more. And I mean it sounds like something really tearing up. I stopped by a local bike shop and asked if they ever heard of this. I have a 21 inch front wheel with a stock fender, he said I probably have a tire rubbing, and said it would be an easy fix. I'm taking the bike to him for my 5,000 mile service, and to adjust the fender. Anyone else ever have this sound coming from the front end? And did you discover the problem?
I will put money on wheel bearings. After market wheels. We are finding this problem quite a bit on after market wheels. Some installers do not set the end play on the bearings correctly in order to save time with wheel spacers.

Socal Ithank you for the response but do you think if this was wheel bearings that it would get worse with each mile, instead of one time I hear it and the next I don't?
I think my bearings are slowly going. I don't feel them all the time. On occasion I feel the roughness coming up through my highway pegs of all things. It feels kinda gruff, but no popping like gravel being thrown into the fender by the tire. It might could be pinging! It's likely to be gravel picked up by the tire.

When I find out what the sound is I will certainly post it here.

Yes sir. Had a couple bikes in here last week. Very similar sound and issue. we lifted the front end but did not hear the noise when we spun the wheel. 1 of them was the wheel was installed backwards. The other was bearings were going bad. Intermittent sound. Best way to tell is to pull the wheel and feel the bearings as you spin the sleeves. If it feels rough as you turn it then you have your answer.
Your 21 inch wheel should not be hitting the inside of your fender. Your total wheel diameter does not change much with a larger wheel. Just the inner diameter changes.
My money is still on wheel bearings.
Every once in a while, I would hear what sounded like a piece of gravel bouncing around under my fender when I had my dyna. I know the sound you refer to. And since it would happen when the road was clear, I finally decided that a stone must have popped out from being stuck in the tread. I don't think it was a bearing issue.
Very possible it is sand or gravel you are hearing. But I would think you would notice the road suface you are riding on. 21 inch wheels are bit less forgiving with road surfaces.
