Default Visor Style Trim Ring

Bought a new trim ring for the headlamp on my 08 RK. The instructions say to slip this over the original and tighten the bolt and screw at the bottom. The problem is it will not tighten enough to close the gap at the bottom of the trim ring. I have monkeyed with this thin for way to long for what should be a five minute install. Anybody have any ideas? Is the gap not supposed to close all the way?

This is just stupid...

Serge, it will close but you have to loosen the factory unit so it gets in behind it.

I did loosen the original but still cant seem to get the closed, if its going to be this difficult to remove and install I may just replace the headlamp bulb now to avoid having to take it off for a LONG time, if I can get it on that is! I wanted one of those fancy schmancy bulbs with the bluish tint anyway. Also, once I get to a certain point, the little bolt just spins and you cant get a wrench or pliers on it.

I tried the search but came up empty, glad I am hot the only one with issues, dont feel quite as foolish asking. The easiest of things seem to cause me the biggest problems. When replacing my tail lamp with an LED, two whole screws, my lamp housing broke!

There are multiple ways folks have solved this. I threw the old ring away then put on the new one. I had to flare out the steel on the headlight ring to make a flange for the new ring to fit around. There is a thread on here where someone shows pics of it. I take it off anytime I need and it gives me no problems going back on. I couldn't ever get the old ring to fit uner the new one. Some on here have been successful with that.

The only guy I have seen who made the gap disappear used some clamps like these:
Put the clamp on each side of the trim ring then clamp a little, tighten/ clamp a little, tighten/ clamp a little tighten. You get the idea.
He was quite pleased.

You'll find tons of posts on the issue, with people telling you to take the stock trim off and put weatherstripping around the inside of the new ring, others telling you to bend the tabs of the headlight mount etc......
I have managed to mount mine as it's described in the directions. What I did is I loosened the stock ring, put the trim ring over it, and then alternatively tightened the two rings, switching from one to the other after a few turns. When you have just a small gap left at the bottom of the trim ring, not big enough for a screw driver to reach the lower ring screw, you tighten the trim ring all the way and you should be able to completely close the gap. It worked for me. I have the frenched trim, not the visor one but it should work the same.
These trim rings are very poorly designed. Good luck.

This trim ring thing has turned into a monster. As stated earlier you can do a search and you'll find more than a handful of solutions on how to get the darn thing on. I myself was "lucky" to loosen the original trim ring and pop the new ring over it and tighten the screw until the ring closed.

Good luck!

I went to the hardware store and got a slightly longer allen head stainless screw with same threads as original. Being slightly longer it was easier to get started and using a allen wrench allowed me to get a little more leverage and snug it up closed

I thought of this too, still leaves me with the issue of the nut turning and not being able to get a small wrench on it. Going to try it anyway I think.
