It also states that in the owners manual. I believe that the main reason is a saftey/cover their azz because the lawyer said so.
Another reason is because some adapters may hit the tank when the bars are full left.

Charge my cell phone on it all the time. Just have to be careful how I orient the plug so it doesn't hang up on the tank.

I have only used it at times as an iPhone charger, but no issues.

Same here. As a test I filled my front tire from empty to see if the compressor would handle it. No problem.

I thought it had something to do with the warranty....if you used something other then the lighter to power up and it caught fire or something like that they wouldn't cover it. As long as you have a fuse between the unit and the lighter I would think everything would be fine. I've used mine for a quick phone charge while traveling. I had my GPS mount hardwired so there was no need to use the lighter. I wouldn't hesitate using it though (I don't smoke)

Mine fell out and bounced down the interstate without anything else ever being plugged into it.

Generally speaking, the heating element in a lighter draws way more current than a GPS or a cell phone. I power my GPS off the back of the lighter - hardwired inside the fairing - no issue at all.

I'm considering getting one of those LED flashlights as a replacement for my lighter, but not sure it wouldn't meet the same fate as the lighter did.

!We have a winner! The dealer is just following the Moco's stance.

I don't see any reason why I can't plug a gps into the fairing lighter. Anyone know if this is true?

Thanks in advance.
Gotta call BS on that one. I have my GPS plugged into mine all the time.

I have my GPS and Sat Radio hard wired to the back of the lighter. It has been running both for 2 yrs and 34k miles no problems. The lighter circuit has a 15amp fuse in the fuse block. The inline fuses to the GPS and Sat Radio are 1 amp each. It works for me.
