Quick question: I was told by my dealer that the lighter in the fairing of my 09 FLHT is not made to power anything (ie., phone, gps. etc), but is only to be used as a lighter. Something about not being strong enough. He said that if I want to use a gps, that will have to get an upgraded lighter. Sounds strange to me but I thought I would ask... I don't see any reason why I can't plug a gps into the fairing lighter. Anyone know if this is true?

Been using my outlet for a GPS for several months now without a problem. I'm using the power cord that came with my Garmin which supplies the correct amps/volts to the unit.

 

Just got back from an 1800 mile trip and have 15,000 more powering my Zumo 550 and have had no trouble.

 

Use it....I agree you cant pull high amp draw through it but the little draw a GPS takes to charge a battery is nothing in my opinion.

After all the thing heats up a cigerette lighter till it's almost on fire and thats OK right? lol......

 

The dealer is feeding you BS, I power a garmin GPS & Sat. radio at the same time with my lighter circuit. Never had a problem.

 

Ask your dealer if that upgrades lighter is for chain smokers.

Thanks to all for the replies. Looks like I am fine to use the lighter for my Magellan GPS. I guess if the bike blows up its still under warranty

 

I think what the stealer meant is once you plug in your gps or whatever it bends the prongs in on the inside. I thought b.s. too till i watched my lighter fall out and bounce down the interstate.Just my 2cents.

 

I power my mini air compressor for pumping up tubes & tires - no problems. I believe Zimbob's got the right picture...dealer wants to sell you their unnecessary option.
