I have heard of running a heavier fluid in the tranny, reducing some of the noise as well as SYN3.
I have a whine in 5th gear of my 09 ultra, but none in 1st or 6th.

The first and fifth gear are straight cut gears for strength... hence, they whine. I started using Amsoil severe gear in the tranny and the 5th gear whine is barely noticable, but the first gear still whines. Straight cut gears do that. Yes, the 2010 5th gear is now helical cut because of the noise. HDs thinking is they wanted to straight cut the 5th gear because it's the most used higher gear. Goes along with the clinkin and clankin of the Harley transmissions. It's normal, so I just got used to it.

How fast are you going when you drop into first? I downshift as I slow and drop a gear when I'm going too slow for that gear if I needed to speed up again. I hit 1st just before I stop. Never heard the 1st gear whine even though I have the same series covered in the OP.
