Hi, here in the UK all Harley Davidson machines come with an alarm system from the factory. With the ignition switch off, the alarm will set itself after 30 seconds. If you rock the bike slightly it will chirp once. If you level it off the jiffy stand it will go off for ever. The siren is loud. It cannot be bypassed either as it is wired through the ignition and EFI. It can be a pain at times, but our insurance companies insist on it. The siren is available on Harley Davidson International models, and just plugs in to the wiring harness. If it is unplugged then nothing works.
Hope this answers your question.
I just bought and installed one. It's about $90 US, cheaper if you use one of the discount HD dealers. It's an enclosed module. To install you pull the Maxi-Fuse (or disconnect the battery). Pull the right side cover, un-do two nuts and turn the ECM over. On the back is a recess for the module and a pre-wired plug. Plug it in, slip it into the recess (speaker facing to the outside of the MC), put the 2 nuts and cover back on and you are done. Just re-attach the battery or Maxi-Fuse and give her a whirl.
It took me about 5 minutes to put it in. I'm happy with it as it chirps if I get on the bike with the alarm on (reminds me to turn it off). It's also a bit more peace of mind when the bike is out of sight.
JBBROOKS said it all. Quick install for even the novice wrencher. I took about 30 minutes but it's cuz I have 11 thumbs. Go for it. Adds to peace of mind.
