Hey Ya'll, I own a 2005 FLHT ElectraGlide Standard and the tailight-stoplamp is dead! The fender light works. When I unplugged the stop lamp and plugged it back in it worked as the stop lamp but the tail was flashing with the vibration of the motor. The lamp then quit again. The plug was filled with black grease and I tried cleaning that out with electronic cleaner but it still didn't work. When it did work I wiggled the plug and it went off and on, so I think the short is in the plug. Anybody else have this problem? I wonder if I should replace the plug wire and lamp assembly or try cleaning more of the black grease out. Waddja think??
The grease is good, keeps out moisture and deadens vibration. Make sure to use dielectric grease when you replace the bulb.
Sounds like a partially broken wire. Check that the wires are attached to the contacts at the base of the bulb and in the connectors, there shouldn't be any broken strands or corrosion.
Also check under the fender, sometimes the harness gets torn up when the tire rubs (especially on lowered bikes).
All fixed fellers!! I went and bought a new pigtail and bulb, but that still didn't work, the tail light worked but not the brake light. Discouragement started to set in, then, I thought, well maybe the fuse was blown on the brake circuit. Yup that was it and when replaced everything works! The old pigtail was blown though because it didn't work but the bulb was fine and I was getting voltage at the socket. I will fiddle with it later but when tested with a volt ohm meter, there was a dead short because I would probe the bulb socket and the pins on the pigtail and there was 100% resistance. Any who it is fixed and I am a happy guy!! Thanks for your responses and I will definitely get the dielectric grease!!
