I have the same problem with the power cable with my Garmin Nuvi 255. I have also read that the cigarette lighter socket only puts out about 9 volts which is probably not good for the GPS. Harley also does not recommend using the cigarette lighter as a power source. I have just ordered a Gilsson Bare Wire Power Cable for about $20 Canadian from GPS City. i will be connecting the cable to the power connection behind the left side cover, and routing the cable under the tank. It has the same connection as my MP3 player as well, so I can charge the player on the bike.

Anybody find a power cable that will work with this unit, that perhaps has a connector to the cigarette lighter that is either shorter, or has an "L" shape to it so there's no chance of rubbing on the gas tank?
My "google-fu" is not working so well today, so would like to know what everybody else is using to power off the cigarette lighter.
I bought the one off of eBay(search lighter adapter) for 3-4 bucks with the same end as Garmin 760 GPS takes. These are generally used for cell phones, etc., so they are good for GPS too. Mine is the one with a 45 degree angle so it really won't hit the tank if you turn it sideways. It worked good but you wont get the FM transmitter to work with this adapter, you can just connect with a patch cord to your radio input for that. Eventually you could install this adapter under the fairing by tappi8ng into the cig lighter circuit with a power outlet, then just leave everything plugged in...just the wire coming out to the GPS will be all that is showing then. Hope this makes sense.
Never heard that the cigarette lighter puts out only 9 volts. Why would that be? I haven't noticed a stepdown device when I've had the fairing cap off.
My gps runs just fine on the cigarette lighter. As for the longer power cord, I just wrap it around the handlebar. But, then, I don't leave the gps on the bike between trips.
