Had mine welded up too. I'd remove the part and have it welded, too hard to weld a piece like that while it's installed and too close to your fender anyway. Mine's lasted 3 yrs now while welded.

I'm being told that because the bracket is pot metal, welding will cause the metal to flake. It has been suggested that it be brazed.
Now, I don't know anything about welding/brazing, but it doesn't sound as strong. Will it be strong enough for my needs?

I just had mine welded Sat. it is not pot metal, my buddy welded it with a mig welder, was easy took about 10 min. Whatever you do don't take it back to whoever told you it was pot metal, he doesn't know sh:t, find somebody else or buy a new one.

I guess this means I need to get the bracket back from him unless he welds it.
Is the brazing strong enough though (if he's already done it)?

brazing is fine. it's welded with melted brass basically. if it breaks again after brazing, you will have to get it brazed again. you can't weld over brazing.
