It shouldn't hurt it a bit to run at 3200. The older bikes have the 3.37 final drive not the2002 they went to 3.15 final ratio. Then in 07 it was 2.92 with the 6 speeds.
Hope this helps.
I have a 2000 RG and do trip all the time at 75 to 80 whitch is 3400 to 3600.
Limit plus 5 usually. The new 6 speed really keeps the rpm's down. 3200 is fine imo. Sometimes I ride in 5th just to keep the rpm's up and have better passing torque if needed. Have to be going 75 plus in 6th to have descent roll on power.

Uh try 2.79 for the tourers 07 and 08... not 2.92. I would love to have anything over 3 but there isn't any real swap I like. Dont want to change the trans pulley to a 30 that means a shorter belt which means special order and down time if trouble comes on the road. Don't want to do the Baker DD7, 3 grand+ yikes, and the 49t clutch basket gear may be the best compromise of cost vs convienence. I say all this as my 08 FLHX loves 3k rpm and thats movin on down the road at around 85 I think.
On friday we took rt 23 down to the Dragons tail, whick is 50 -55mph most of the way. Coming home sunday we took I-75 which is 70mph most of the way. I rode between 70 and 75 most of the way and my bike, a 2000 road king, ran about 3200 rpm and seemed like it was wound pretty tight. Is it safe to run 70-75 for a long period of time?
If 3200 rpm sounds kinda high to you then I'd be willing to be you're lugging your engine most the time. Red line is up around 6200 so 3200 is nothing.
If your 2000 is bone stock (no cam or big bore) try keeping your rpm's above 2400 whenever possible. You can run wide open all day long if your rev limiter is working correctly and your bike has a good tune.
It's not unusual for people to lug these engines but it's not good for them.
Don't be shy with it. Open that bad boy up and let her run!!
.........I like 5mph over...which on a 65 MPH is 73 on my speedo.

I noticed too, that my speedo is off by 3 mph. Had my GPS in my truck and the GPS speed matched the speedo. On the bike, the GPS indicates I am actually going 3 miles per hour slower than the speedo indicates.
