Default Does yours do this?

I am riding a 2009 FLHT with 20K on it. Since new it has had a problem with the idle speed hanging up. I have had it looked at by my local dealer here in St. Louis, St. Joe MO HD, Black Hills HD, Antelope Valley HD in Lancaster CA and even had a Kuryakyn mechanic at the Sturgis ralley look at it but no one has come up with the cause or a fix.

It happens most often when the bike is good and hot like pulling off of a long run on the highway. I will pull in the clutch and start dropping gears as I am comming to a stop and the bike will be idling at around 2000 RPM. I can get it back to 950 by twisting the grip backwards. I know it sounds like the TBW twist grip is hanging up but everyone who has looked at it says that the twist grip is not sticking. When it is acting up, I can raise the rpm up to about 2000 and let go of the twist grip and it will snap back to idle position but the rpm will stay at 2000. My guess has always been that the throttle actuator is sticking but the dealers all say "I have never seen one of them sticking".

It has the Fuel Moto power package on it but was doing this before I installed the upgrades so that is not the cause of the problem.

Have any of you seen this problem?

Have any of you gotten the problem fixed?

Thanks,

Jim

I would try cleaning the Idle actuator with spray carb cleaner. Its inside the throttle body. Worked for me.

Thanks,

Do you access it from outside or inside of the throttle body?

Inside. Catch the dirt and fluid with a rag. It's a point sticking out of a little side port. Turn the ingnition off and on while spraying directing the spray into the IAC with the tube that comes with the carb cleaner to actuate the Idle solenoid.

You might try resetting your throttle setting. Turn your ignition on and off 4 times. Turn your ignition on, wait until your dash lights go off, turn ignition off and wait 15 seconds then turn on again. Do it 4 times.

Don't know if this is applicable but I had a similar problem with my corvette. Took it to ten mechanics and no one could fix it. Finally I took it to a restoration shop and the mechanic there found the problem. Turned out it was a internal vacuum leak.

I am not sure which fuel control modual comes with the "power package" from Jamie at Fuel Moto but if it is a Power Comander 5 then there is a throttle position setting in the module also that has to be set at zero. Call Jamie at Fuel Moto he will definately have some ideas for you if that is it or not.

My throttle grip sometimes is sticky and will stick if I don't move if. In other words, it acts like cruise control as I can take my hand off and the grip does not release. The grips are Arlen Ness. Is there a bearing inside that could be sticking to a track of some sort?

Seems that if it's acting up for the mechanic, they should be able to pinpoint the problem. If not, find another mechanic. They can look at all the sensor readings while the bike is acting up and easily go from there. It doesn't matter if a mechanic "hasn't seen a bike do that before", if he looks at yours, then he has. That's bs. Things that would be suspect would be TBW grip sensor, throttle actuator, iac valve operation and cleanliness, and vacuum leaks to start with.
