No, the 96 motor featured a completely different, updated cam drive. Some cams, like the SE204 were made in both cam drive configurations, so you need to make sure you've got the correct one for your application.

boogaloodude, I see that the cam gears are different with the 88 to 96. Thanks for that info.

Man, I guess I'm the only one, or at least one of the only ones using a SE 203. Bought them because we found my stock cams to look oddly worn, and the 203's were not much more than buying new stock cams, and seemed like a safe , mild upgrade. Some days I like em, and other days i don't. I like to ride in the 2500 rpm range, which is not where that cam seems to live, at leas to me. Above that, and that thing pulls better than stock. Of course, I'm running Rhinehart True duals, which isn't helping matters. Mine is an 05 FLHT w/ a carb, which is rare I guess, and cool I think, so it sounds a little better than EFI I guess,a nd the cam helped that sound a bit too. Didn't do my homework on the 204's, wish I'd've checked into those.

My 255 has a slight lope but it might be because I turned the idle down to
980.

There's not a whole lot of difference between the 203 and 204 cams. The 204 does have a little more noticible "lope" at idle, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to perform any better. There's only so much that a set of cams can do for your performance, though, and without pulling the heads, we're all pretty limited in cam selection to the milder, bolt in cams.

I think the SE203 is a good match for a carbureted 88 touring bike. If you think the motor is not coming on until after 2500, it might be in the tune.

++++++++++++++++++++++++
From my learning experience, the early opening EX Val. bleeds off cyl pressure resulting in less bottom end but helps scavenging at highter rpm.
Later Ex opening helps lower rpm tq by keeping pressure on pistons longer

The earlier the Intake closes is what most look for (the lower the more) for low end tq..

So when you advance a cam timing 4 degrees does it change the lope of the cam?

Thanks for the info guys... I posted this and actually forgot that I did.... I feel like a terrible forum parent! lol.

Alright, to add to the debate, and to defend what I originally said... The stock performance of this bike is fine for me. Its a touring bike, not a race bike... With that in mind, my bike has a very old school look, and I wanted to try and get the old school sound. This is my first fuel injected bike, so I am in pretty unfamiliar territory. I love the sounds of the SE 211.. That might be the way to go for me. I have the SE adjustable pushrods, the non tapered type (the tapered type were on back order for nearly two months when I was changing my guides) Think there will be any rubbing issues with the pushrods?

Thanks!
