Default Help with Cam selection

I need help selecting cams for my engine build. I see some of you posting about ccp's, timing, lift etc and I need help so I cam make the best choice for me.

Back story: took 07 flhx in for 255 cams install when doing other service and discovered excessive crank runout along with other things so it was either button it up and trade it or build an engine. The cases are split and the crank and rods are off for truing, balancing and welding. The cost if labor is basically the same whether we put it back stock or spend more for upgraded parts and machining. We're going out to 103 and are going to cleasn up the heads a bit and I'm now talking cams.

My mechanic would like to build a mean machine but I'm an old guy and reliability and ridability are more important. He like Woods cams so I'm looking at the specs for their cams (http://www.woodcarbs.com/06-11cams.htm). The TW6-6 and the TW7 seem like likely choices but the new TW555 looks interesting also. We're going w new pistons with compression upped to 10 to 1 or 10.25 to 1 so that should increase low end torque.

Any comments.

Don

I have SE 255's but am contemplating the TW6-6.... Until the TW555 was mentioned... I am awaiting Jamie/Fuelmoto test info...

At 10.25 static compression, the Woods 6 would be a stellar choice. Definitely one to go on your short list. Especially if you're not planning on doing much to your heads.

You might wait a bit longer, as Fuel Moto will be doing some comparison tests on the 6-6, 6-6 w/4° advance, and the new 555 in the next few weeks. I'm not sure, but I think he'll be doing it on his new '11 103 bike, which likely won't have the compression you're contemplating but the results should be interesting and pertinent to your project.

I believe you are looking in the right direction with the Wood's cam selection. I have spoke with Bob and he was big on the 7H for this application. We spoke a few weeks back and the 555 did not come up in our conversation. I am not sure if it was out yet or not. You have to understand that he may be assuming that doing the accommodating head work is remedial. So that said look at the amount of head work your willing to do. My understanding is that the valves springs are a must to replace on any cam upgrade. Another weak link in the Harley motor is as you discovered the crank assembly along with the crank bearing. You are spot on in having the crank trued and welded!! Why not have your cases bored out to 110" since you are this far into the build?

I am seriously looking into my next upgrade beyond stage one. If you don't mind me asking how much is your labor quote for this rebuild and what does it include?

Sorry i haven't checked this in a while. Since I'm not riding, I'm out working extra to pay for this.

Update: The crank and rods are back, trued, balanced, welded. The tech talked me into a Timken crank bearing set. Said it's probably overkill but what the heck. The heads are getting mild porting with slightly oversized valves as well as being cc'd. The tech is suggesting the Woods 7 cams w/o the 4 degree gear. Says with the 10.25 compression will help the low end enough. From all the dyno's I've seen this should put me well above 100/100 with 90+ above 2500 rpm.

I've read a lot on this and other forums and I hope this setup will work well for me. Someone asked about cost of labor. The tech said we'd be in the $4-4500.00 range with $1500.00 of that his labor with the balance parts and subcontracted machine shop services.
