Iclick, over $800 from the dealer or $120 DIY, and that includes a new MDG assy.
Soft 02 is right on, but you'll also need a front pulley tool to get the pulley off.
Really straight forward DIY.
I'm almost positive the misalignment is the Inner primary cover, and in turn the IPB or the MDG Bearing pay the price. The trap door bearing seems bulletproof for some reason?
Well, here's my experience. I had the main bearing replaced at 23,000 miles and the bearing noise has resurfaced now that I'm at 30,000 miles. I had told the dealer that I was going to run the bike until it totally failed before bringing it back to them for repair. Now I guess I'll seek out someone more reliable since all they did is put the same suspect part back in my tranny. Great self-generating business model, huh?
My 08 Main shaft bearing went out at 30,000 mi. The replacement bearing must have been of higher quality cause I have 80,000 on it now with no more problems. Knock on wood!
Has my 08 SG into the indy to get new E3 tires installed. When they had the bike on the lift and spun the rear wheel the sound of the main shaft bearing was very noticeable. Only 27k on the bike. Had them tear it apart and the MSB was shot. I had heard the clicking noise when roll the bike when warm, but had no idea what it was. Now I know.
What's the bill look like on one of these repairs? My first was in warranty, but they had the whole dadgum tranny and primary in pieces, so it can't be a cheap repair. I doubt if I have the tools to DIY, but if I did it would be tempting considering the cost savings. Any special tools involved?
I am guessing some special tools are needed. My last one at 67K(under ESP $50 deductible) was $705 by my Indy. First one at 20K by the stealership under ESP only had parts of $220 listed on the invoice but can figure ~5hrs labor @$90/hr so ~$800

Mine ran just over $700. Pretty soon my daughter will be contributing another $700 out of her inheritance to keep her daddy in the saddle. Maybe the next $700 will go towards putting in a Baker 6-speed.
