Just start with turning the volume way up! After that you start tweeking the buttons.

Actually, it's NOT just like volume control. When dealing with equalization, whether it's a simple bass and treble **** or a 24-band graphic equalizer, center is always zero. Anything below center/zero is represented as a negative number, and anything above center/zero is represented as a positive number.
