Default I thought they were getting loud..

Pulled my V&H mufflers today. They had lost their nice deep sound and were starting to get a little raspy. This is the result of 15,000 or so miles. The front 1/3 to 1/2 of the baffle wrapping was blown out. I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow morning.

You going back together with the pink stuff, or steel wool / pink stuff combo, or something else?

Not sure. I was thinking about checking out the Honda dealer up the road and see what they had as far as wrapping. First a layer of glass tape, then the wrap and then maybe some wire mesh all wrapped with wire. V&H uses a couple pieces of scotch tape to hold it in place, no wonder it blew out, not much holding it in. If I can't find any decent wrap, maybe I'll try the pink stuff. I have enough of it laying around. I've been told the steel wool stuff gets brittle real fast, although I have no experience with it. I've also heard the gasket stuff for wood stoves held in place with a wire wrap works well also.

Dead blow and a large wooden dowel works every time.

try the Silent Sport. I will have to find you a link if your interested. It is more of a yarn type weave and supposed to last a lot longer without coming apart. I know that Fuel Moto carries it Give them a call.

Here is a linky

Your problem is a normal maintenance item for dirt bikes. Go by any dirt bike shop and they will have both 2 and 4 stroke packing available for around $10. Your existing packing looks like the 2-stroke version although either one should work fine. You will get enough packing in one bag to do one muffler. It is typical for the packing to be held with masking tape, it's stuffed in there and breaks apart over time. No need to wire it in. Larry
