Default Header Pipes on 2010 Ultra

I know there are numerous threads of a similar nature on here but I still have not read the answer to this question.

I want to replace the header pipe to reduce the heat from the cat. All I want to do is replace the header pipe. I want to leave the rest of the bike stock. I don't need it louder or additional performance.

If I just replace the header pipe and leave everything else just as it is (stock) do I have to install some sort of fuel management system? Or will the ECM make the adjustments? I know that opening the header pipe would theoretically make the bike leaner but I've also read that the ECM will adjust.

Has anyone else done this yet and what were your results? Can I just replace the header pipe and make no other changes? Any advice is appreciated.

I think if you left the stock mufflers it would be ok. I went with the fullsac x pipe and the rest of his stage 1 with tts map and runs great and cooler. mike

That's what the O2 sensors are suppose to do. I don't see a problem. It shouldn't hurt your motor.
But a Stage 1 or a SEST will reduce your heat also. So you might want to think about it too.

I'm not an expert but from speaking with my dealer I would say you could replace the header pipes leaving the stock mufflers with no problem. The reason I say this is I know two people who put on free flowing mufflers on 09's (no cats) and K&N type filter but not the whole air kit and they have had no problems. The dealer did the work on both bikes and the bikes run great. You would just be removing the cats but still leaving the more restrictive mufflers in place.

As long as you're not in any of the EPA-mandated inspection states - you should be good to go. Swapping CAT to non-CAT won't affect set-up & O2's should adjust. Also, another option is to have the CAT extracted from your header - if yo do a search there are posts showing how this is done & best bet, if you're not comfortable w/modifying, is to get in touch with a custom bike shop who can cut & weld exhaust. Good luck!

Here's what your header pipe with a cat looks like cut in half

That looks pretty scary

I think my RK will be leaving the dealer with new header pipes before it is delivered to me in December

To echo the OP, if you replace just the header pipes would you need a fuel managment system installed?

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to remove the cat from the original pipes. I want to save them just in case they ever start doing inspections in my area. But I do want to get rid of that heat from the cat, so I'm looking to install the Fullsac X-pipe.

I've also been reading about the X-IEDs. I think that may be a good combination with replacing the head pipe to richen it up a bit to help cool it down some more. Anyone been using the X-IEDs?

IMO, getting a tuner and having your bike tuned so it's not running EPA lean will cool it down more than removing the cat equiped header. Mine runs as cool as my '02 did and still has the cat......

Just do the stage 1 and the new headers you'll dig the extra power and much less heat. Check out fuel moto their head pipe rocks
