While true that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gearsets are helical-cut, 6th is no gearset at all. What happens in 6th is the tranny output (the belt driver), which otherwise is driven from the jackshaft as the output of a helical-cut gearset, gets locked directly to the mainshaft. In speeds #1-5 there are 4 transfers of power through chain, gears (2), and belt between the crankshaft and rear wheel. In speed #6 there are only the chain and the belt between them.
TexasRanger: you may not have had any part in getting anything fixed at all. It could be the original intent was to use the cush drive last year but the bean-counters nixed it (like they evidently did the oil cooler). This has likelihood of being a result of the engineers putting their foot down and nothing to do with the few customer complaints at all.
So in essence you are saying that MOCO doesnt care what it's customers are saying??? If that is true then don't expect them to be around much longer.
If you say so. That sounds pretty authoritative. I was merely speculating.

So in essence you are saying that MOCO doesnt care what it's customers are saying?
I'm not implying that at all.
Isn't it a bit strange that the IDS as a retrofit is so quickly available? It's obviously (to me) not something that was searched-out as a way to "fix" a bad design. It has all the earmarks of being the rest of the original which was finally "allowed" to be incorporated. This is a tricky thing to do and I'm sure it wasn't made available until the new model year because it could be construed by some few malcontents as being an admission that there was a problem all along. H-D reserves the right to make changes at any time without incurring obligation. If they were to have tried to get the couple of complainers to shut up by providing them with the IDS earlier-on it might have been "construeable" as incurring obligation. Don't forget that in a company the size of H-D the engineers aren't the ones in contact with the customers. The financial department is solidly in the middle.
Also, in answer to a question about what the IDS is/does you provided a link to a page which for you contains a particular post. It would be better to provide a link to the specific post because, as you may or may not be aware, the number of posts shown per page is configurable. We don't all necessarily have our accounts set up the same as you, so that "page" link is just hit-or-miss.
This site software is really pretty "sucky". The way to obtain the direct link to a post is to click on the "Post #xxx" link at the end of the post. A window should pop up with the information you can cut-and-paste into your reply.
I have a 07 Electraglide Classic, making a ton of banging in 5th and 6th, with 6,000 miles on it.... Was told it would quite down after 10,000 miles, but I am not buying that, I am ordering the IDS kit for mine and will post back with my results as well, Yep, I believe it sounds like a harley cover up in 08 for the 07 issue, but I am thankful for a fairly inexpensive fix compared to the baker transmission alternative......
OMG - there are 25 pages of - er - well - stuff - on this issue.
You should all get together and file a class action suit.
Why you ask?
Because the moco has produced a looser and you are spending your hard earned cash to get a dream. And by god, you should get the dream.
You'd be surprised at how much action 1000 bikers can get with a $100 each to a good lawyer firm who has riders.
I jest not. At least one of you is a lawyer and knows the right people. While I am not affected - too many of my bros are.
This is true Gene, they should not be so greedy and recall these bikes and fix the issue........I'm sure it wouldn't break the company to do that, and it sure would make them out to be a company that backs there product up.............instead of turning there back on it for a year and coming up with a "new enhancement" the following year??
I'm ordering a IDS for my 07 Ultra, in my opinion the noise is not as much from the tranny as it is from the compensator/primary chain. I read somewhere earlier that a guy changed the spring in the compensator to a SE spring and it fixed his issue. I feel it is the change in the 96er more cubes, that is cusing all these issues. It makes good sense to absorb as much of the shock as possible to avoid other metal parts from clanging around.
My parts guy/dealer told me he won't carry the kit, what is up with that. Going to get it from Zanotti's!!!
So let me get this straight...the compensator is part of the rear sprocket assembly? And the new IDS fits over the top of it and replaces the stock sprocket?
