I like the fact that a couple of people caused the '08's to be fixed and the part made available to 07 riders to resolve their issues.
I've been on this thread a long time. Did it ever occur to you that folks that have a new bike and think "hey, that's not right" might find these threads? Ever google "harley davidson transmission noise"? This forum is at the top of the list. I've also noticed now that some of the biggest detractors of those of us who complained are also ordering IDS. Your welcome!
Lastly, I was talking to my Service Mgr at Horny Toad HD in Temple, TX last Sat and he told me that pretty much every 07 owner of bikes they sold came back and asked about the 5th gear noise. He isn't getting that same feedback from 08 owners. So just keep trying to stir this up. It's almost over. Once I get my IDS installed it will be for me.
1st and 5th are spur gears. Spur gears are cut straight across, as opposed to helicals, which are cut at an angle. 2nd - 4th and 6th are all helical gears. Helicals run quieter. Spur gears are generally noisier. I really don't know why they just don't use helicals for all of them. They are more expensive to make.
While true that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gearsets are helical-cut, 6th is no gearset at all. What happens in 6th is the tranny output (the belt driver), which otherwise is driven from the jackshaft as the output of a helical-cut gearset, gets locked directly to the mainshaft. In speeds #1-5 there are 4 transfers of power through chain, gears (2), and belt between the crankshaft and rear wheel. In speed #6 there are only the chain and the belt between them.
TexasRanger: you may not have had any part in getting anything fixed at all. It could be the original intent was to use the cush drive last year but the bean-counters nixed it (like they evidently did the oil cooler). This has likelihood of being a result of the engineers putting their foot down and nothing to do with the few customer complaints at all.
No offense, but that makes no sense. Bean counters? What they fire all of them this year? Cause the "Engineers" put bremo brakes, bigger fuel tank, fly-by-wire throttle, etc etc and the IDS on the 08's.
Engineers REALLY put their foot down this year...
