I had a close call with a cow once, but I didn't hit it. What I did hit though was a pig. I came over a little rise in the road, and there he was right in the middle of the road, laying on his side already dead. I went over him like a huge speed bump and tweeked the forks on my bike, but I didn't wreck.
Glad you are OK.
Can you get the farmer/rancher to cover your deductible?
I would think hitting a cow would be different than hitting a deer.
We (my step father & I) used to farm in northeast Nissouri. Unless this was somewhere with "free-range" laws the owner of the cow is liable. As to being poor, we carried insurance for this. The farmer is required (in northeast MO anyway) to maintain fences and if he does not, all liability is his. We had one cow hit by a pickup and even with good fences it cost us.
Out here in AZ there are lots of Free range areas........always heightens my senses when I see those signs. Have brushed very close to a longhorn a couple of times in the car at night. Not on the bike yet and hope I never do.
Your story could have been a lot worse then the bike being in the shop for 2 months. Glad you're OK.
My buddy bought a new road king so we went for a ride the other evening on our way home we saw four cows in the middle of the road. I couldn't get it shut down hit one of the cows in the hind quarter flew over my bike and the cow but needless to say I walked away from it and am thanking God because it could have been alot worse and glad my buddy got his bike shut down.
There's your sign!! LOL
Just kidding, glad you're ok..
Nothing like a road full of slow elk to get your attention real quick.
Glad all are safe. Have had deer, turkey, hogs, coyote, and many small critters run out on me but not yet seen a cow while on the scoot. Came on a whole herd in the middle of the night one time while driving down in Baja towards Cabo and damn glad the binders worked coming up on that bunch and was really happy I had mounted those small aircraft landing lights up front too!
Back in about 1968, I hit a cow when I was driving a Jeep while deer hunting in Colorado. It $hit all over the hood and windshield of the Jeep! Since I never wear a helmet or face shield, I certainly hope I never hit one when riding the bikes!!!!
