I was just thinking, what would happen to the trip if they get pulled over by a trooper and the teen gets his bike impounded. Ruin a nice trip for sure.

Dad needs to take Jr out and teach him how to ride, just the two of them. Get him some experience before taking on a group ride. If he gets experience, I wouldn't worry about the license.

To whom it may concern:

As far as breaking the law-I think we were all born to break the law. Maybe it's just me. I like to do what I want to do. It's a freedom thing. I don't mean I'd kill somebody or rob a bank. No felonies, but misdemeanors? Yeah, if that's what I want to do at the time. If I think I can get away with it-especially traffic laws. I beat the speed limit sometimes, I make illegal u turns, I sometimes park illegally, I even had a camera catch me one time when I lost a race with a yellow light at 3 am and I was the only vehicle at the intersection. What the hell. If I get caught, I get a ticket, so what?

I think a lot of people get their panties in a wad over nothing,Then sit back and say nothing when they it really counts. I think we are becoming a bunch of sheep.

Back around 1776, the colonists broke a whole bunch of the King's laws, and look what happened-the greatest nation in the world was born.

During Prohibition a lot of people broke the law with moonshine stills and speak easy's(sp). Thanks to that lawbreaking we can have a beer when we want one, and don't have to worry about going to jail.

I've been reading where it's ok to let your kid ride a dirt bike and I agree with that. But kids get hurt riding dirt bikes. Is that child endangerment? How about learning to ride a bicycle?

If Dad and Jr want to ride without a license, let 'em. No harm-no foul.

When I got my motorcycle endorsement my driving test "instructor" said "ride out into the middle of the parking lot and do two figure 8's". Then she took off 4 points because I didn't use my turn signal in the parking lot. LOL. Basically the endorsement is an excuse for them to get $5. It don't mean you can operate a motorcycle in traffic. It's all about experience and you can't buy that-you have to earn it.

I have to agree with Smith. I got my first license to drive when I was 15yrs old,and it was a 125cc. The only experience I had was on a Yamaha 80cc in a field (NO STREET EXPERIENCE),and check this out. I took the written test two times and failed because I just could not understand what I was reading. The Trooper took me in his office for the 3rd test, asked me all the questions in laymen terms and I answered every question correct. I rode around the block in front of his patrol car with him honking once to turn right and twice to turn left. Still nervous,I went the wrong way on the honks and I still passed, because I drove the speed limit, and signaled properly. This was 30yrs ago and I have not taken anyone down yet. If junior can ride safely,go ride in the back,if he can't,don't go. That is just my 2 cents.

you're not being a douchebag at all. it's the failure of the boys parents to assume their responsiblity for their kid. and if it were me, i'd stay away from that situation altogether. just go out for a ride by yourself or with other friends. enjoy your day out on your bike and forget about it. what the hell is wrong with his parents, are they afraid of saying "no" to their kid? go figure. thanks again dr. phil and oprah.

you guys really sound like a bunch of grumpy old men, honestly.

There are 15 year old kids that could ride circles around you. Some have been racing bikes since they were 4 or 5.

To ASSUME he dosen't know how to ride.....you sound like your dad....remember how you said you would never sound like him?

Well, you do.

When I was 15, I did alot of crazy $hit.....and I was damn coordinated.

Reminds me of the Street Rod crowd...bunch of grey hairs thinking only old guys are allowed, when hot rodding was started by young guys. Stuck up ******.

P.S. If you report to the cops...that makes you a snitch...and deserving of an a$$ stomping, IMHO.

Well, like I said, it's the parents responsibility. Would I feel bad, of course, but it's not my call for someone elses decision for their kids....it's theirs.

Whats the deal with "overnight riding", so they break up the trip, talk about the previous days ride, and critique the kid.

I'll bet half the "nay sayer" posters have "never" done anything like that, or have they??

If they've not......dull and boring lives prolly...

Whatever happened to a "challenge", guess most folks aren't up to it anymore

Well said.

Everybody assumes the kid still wears diapers and says "ga-ga".

Daddy is teaching him well and after this ride, he will be well seasoned.

Other kids his age don't spend time with daddy. The gangs are their family.
Over a dozen shot - EVERY summer weekend in Chicago. (at least 8 last night).
No daddy to keep them right.

For all you old coot's - watch out, somebody might step on your lawn when you ain't lookin'!

Just me as an ex LE (Deputy Sheriff) but I believe Roadking2000 pretty much covered it. Yes, I rode before it was legal to do so, but it was on private property in the CA hills. One neighbor/friend had six and a half sections either owned or leased.
If something is illegal or wrong, it is just that. Even if there ride goes on without an accident, what do you suppose will happen if a random traffic stop is set up somewhere checking for drunks in one of those "Take Back Our Highways" thing that seems to be so popular anymore? Kid gets a ticket, Daddy gets a ticket for allowing an unlicensed operator on the bike, then Mommy & Daddy get sent to take parenting classes for endangerment, depending on where you are the bike then gets impounded. As an even worse case, what if the kid then panics an takes off with the police then in pursuit?

NO, this whole thing is just not a good idea at all. As I said several posts back this is not the 1950s or the 1960s. (If it was, my answer would likely be different somewhat.) Unfortunately, this is 2010 with a whole new set of rules that we have to live by.

Hey BaPiggy, stick to your guns. Nothing may happen on the ride, but something could happen and you dont want any part of that. I have learned that you need to go with your gut on things like this.
