I have a 2008 Street Glide with Screamin Eagle Intake and Vance and Hines Slip-ons and Power Commander and has been dyno'd. I bought it new and have 28,000 miles on it. Since new I have gone through 6 windshields and use the stock short ones. The windshields all crack in the same place, vertically above the left screw hole. The dealership has added the windshield to the extended warranty and I have contacted HD on this issue.
HD says that it is one of three problems: under or over torquing (dealership assures me this has been addressed) or engine vibration due to modifications.
So far the dealership has replaced the inner fairing brackets because of a re-design from HD. The winshield has been replaced one time since the fairing brackets have been replaced.
On one replacement they hollowed out more of the hole, but that was two windshields ago.
I have a friend who is into building his own airplanes and says that if there is any undue stress on the inside of that bolt hole it will cause a crack.
A friend who rides suggested a rubber grommet be added to the screw hole to dampen any vibration problems...
Any help would be gratefully appreciated
PS HD assures me that there is no history with this windshield problem on the Street Glide model....
I have an 07 Ultra Classic, just last week I've noticed two small hair line cracks by the left bottom bolt as well. I have not touched a thing on the fairing. Just hope when after replacing it does not happen again. I will most likely have the dealer replace it, so if it does I can blame it on them.
Just think...with the shorter windshields there is less stress at the mounting bolts then with using a taller windshield.
What ever is going on..it seems you are going to keep having the same problem using the same windshields.
I would think buying a thicker windshield would solve your problem.
Usually any cracks that appear anywhere near the mounting holes are due to over torqued bolts. Since that doesn't seem to be the case here I'm not sure what the problem could be. Rarely saw any problems with the stock windshields on the SGs when I was working at the dealership and the ones I did were due to the bolts being too tight. You may want to check the insert that the bolt threads into. They can have sharp edges and if they aren't seated completely they could rub and crack the w/s especially if you have more than normal vibration due to mods.
