My friend has a 2000 SE Road glide, and he absolutely loves it. However, he has had a recurring issue. According to him, he has had an issue with the Primary seal on the engine. It seems that every 6000 miles or so, something happens where the seal starts to leak, and he needs to have it replaced. Before, it was under warranty, so it was "fixed"each time. Seems the fix was just a band-aid since it keeps hapenning. So now its out of warranty, and it'll cost him somewhere around 800 to repair it. This is the 3rd time it has happened.
My, and his questions are:
1.is this a known issue with that year bike.
2.if it is, is there anything that can be done to permanently fix it
3.should he bother continue to have it repaired, and instead consider replacing the motor with a different year, or having it rebuilt(the bike has 40,000mi on it)
AT 40K ENGINE REBUILD IS NOT FAR AWAY FOR A TOP END. THE PRIMARY LEAK SHOULD BE FIXED WITHOUT A LOT OF PROBLEM. MAKE SURE IT IS NOT A SHIFT SHAFT PROBLEM. IT CERTAINLY SHOULD NOT COST ANYWHERE NEAR 800.00. IF IT DOES IT IS A LOT MORE THAN A SIMPLE PRIMARY LEAK.
40K and ready for rebuild????????? You have got to be kidding. What are you doing to abuse the bike????????.
Front seal issue: I would look for indication of cutting seal at install. Too much chain tension. Stator cutting seal. There has got to be a cause for not lasting longer than 6K.
The sick part about the whole thing is that he treats the thing like a baby. Usually ends up changing the oil in between services even. I question the use of that, but the point is he is really good to it, which is what really kills him. I hadn't really heard of such an issue myself before, so I was inclined to think that it might be specific to his bike only... The bike is ok otherwise, and runs like a drem, it just leaks.
The primary is a simple cover, if there was a problem with the cover or the motor it would not seal for 800 miles then let go, Id say its maybe not using loctite on the bolts or cheap gaskets. But if he can do any simple work, the hd gasket is 30 bucks and takes a hour tops to change, no big deal at all to do.
Was just checking with my friend to let him know about the responses, and he says that the bike also needs the primary inner seal replaced....does the price make more sense now, or is it still inflated?
