Harleys are no different from other modern engines. You change the air going in then you MUST remap you fuel settings. I have a 05 Mustang and wanted to fit a Cold Air Induction kit, I HAD to remap my fuel management system otherwise my motor would not have run correctly and caused major damage. Of course the plus side was better performance which really woke the car up. By the way it was OK with just an exhaust change, no change needed.
I am looking to buy a Road King that has had only the exhausts changed, but I intend to add a better air intake so I know I will have have to upgrade my fuel management system to get the full benefit. To me it is more important as 95% of my riding is in Florida and heat is a major factor to screwing up an engine running lean!
Dude, you sound so ridiculious. This is not rocket science.Your adding new pipes, which creates better breathing(more air),so you have to add more fuel. The ecm's on these bikes are not that self adjusting to adjust all the lean spots at different throttle settings. The ecm needs to be adjusted with a device that can change the settings while using real world conditions(Dyno tune). The PC's work but it's a piggy back system.Newer bikes benefit more from fuel management systems like the TTS,SESPT,or the SERT!!! When ever you change the pipes,or air cleaner the bike needs re-tuning,it's a fact.Your changing air conditions so you have to change fuel settings. If you don't you run the risk of damaging the motor. It might not be visable at first, depending on weather conditions, but it will surface at some point in time, & maybe by then it's to late.If you pay top dollar for a Harley why cheap out on the tune?? Most due, & thats why most have problems!!! Any one that says you don't need a tune after changing pipes,or a/c doesn't know what they are talking about. If they think they do, then line up against someone who has had a tune done correctly & watch him smoke your ***!!!
Not to be argumentative but... Not expecting rocket science just viable proven documentation. I have seen documentation showing just adding new pipes can still still be handled and adjusted by the ECM. That's why it's called a computer and not a rider.
Most people doing mod's aren't going to be running full throttle for extended periods of time. Dunno maybe my 38 years of working on cars and bikes haven't paid off too well. Doubtful though.
Just fyi, if i wanna line up against anyone for the pure speed factor and good old fashioned drag race I'll just borrow my son's Gixxer 1K (sold my KAWI or I would use that) and smoke your *** all day long and then some. Just saying. Didn't by an HD for racing, power or speed. JMHO.
To the OP hope all works well and mod's do what you expect.
