so I guess im confused on this whole power commander thing. do I really need one to run aftermarket pipes and air cleaner? when I bought my iron the dealer had already installed an aftermarket air cleaner and some different pipes but never did mention anything about getting a tuner or anything like that. so I just need to know if I really need one if im gonna have aftermarket pipes and an air cleaner? thanks for the feedback
No, you don't "need" one. The stock computer will compensate for the increased airflow, and maintain the factory AFR throughout the RPM range. However, you will make more power, and your engine will run cooler and last longer with the addition of X14iEDs or a Power Commander unit.
I disagree with tek, I think you need at least the X14's, these engines are running so lean from the factory that you almost need them with stock AC & pipes.
A proper controller like the PCV does an even better job.
Opinions vary on this, do your own research to satisfy yourself. Just be aware that those who claim that you "need" a fuel controller are basing that opinion on fear, not fact. Stephen Mullens (owner of Nightrider - manufacturer of the X14iEDs) claims that you don't need to add a fuel controller of any sort - and he wants to sell you his product. That's good enough for me.
I would say no also. I had Rinehart crossback pipes and a stage 1 filter kit on my bike with the stock computer and it ran fine. I put 4,800 miles running that way. I now put shorty pipes with no baffles or oxygen sensors and now needed the PCV to compensate for the open pipes and no O2 sensors. I am sure it would be better to have an aftermarket computer added and then dyno'd to tune it better;but for what you are running; you are fine.
And boy do those pipes look good on my bike! Im running a PCV but thats where my research led me too. I agree with the guy who said do your research and go with what you think your bike needs. (plus if you mess something up its your fault and cant be blamed on us for telling you :P )

If the dealer installed the AC, he may have also done the ECM update. Typically when you add more air you need to change the fuel mixture. Ask the dealer if he updated the ECM or if the new AC has the same air flow as the stock.
