These are my symptoms;
Abnormal vibration felt primarily in my feet between 2200 and 2800 rpm, starter banging, low speed surging, and rough idle at times. I have had my bike (09 FLHX bone stock) to the dealer...well this is the third trip there for this problem. They can't feel it hear it or find it.
June 09 they pushed a new down load for the low speed surging which helped until a moth ago, march 10 front tire under recall.
Has anyone else that replaced their compensator had these symptoms ?
Does the vibration still exist when in neutral, or only under load?
Motor mounts or crank run-out come to mind.
Low speed surging? Maybe an intake leak? (Surely a dealership would know to look for that). But if you can get it to surge on a kickstand, try spraying some wd-40 at the intake seals and listen for any change.
It vibrates sitting still in neutral, its a come and go problem its there more than its not and drives me nuts. The starter bangs really hard and has from day one as the vibration has been there from day one but has been getting progressivley worse. It feels like a rotating assembly. it will make your feet go numb my passengers complain about their feet too.
The starter bang likely can be helped with a compensator, but I don't think it will do anything for the vibes. I'd look up some threads about the motor mount issues some folks have been having.

Rotate the rear wheel in 6th gear. (you need a buddy to do that)
It's good to have a second set of eyes around, anyway. Take turns and confirm each others findings.
The needle bounces around a little so you wanna rotate several times to get a good read.
You need to make sure the lifters are off the peak of all four cam lobes, before removing the cam chain. No need for a valve to be wide open while rotating the crank. Some guys take their push-rods out, but I never have and I have done several without issue.
Thanks, I have been researching this prob for a couple of weeks while my ride sits in the service dept. I told them it felt felt like a rotating assembly. Alot of guys are talking about motor mounts and compensators and a few describe the same symptoms. I'm hearing 09's have a problem with the compensator having weak springs and are causing problems. I really hate to have to do my own warrenty work...lol.
Thanks for your help! I may have to check the crank on my own if the dealer won't do it! of course this is the same dealer that checked my rotors when I said I had a warped front and they said "ahh they are with in specs" yeah I told them this time to actually ride the bike! now they are putting new ones on...gee sometimes the customers aren't complete dumbass's!
I changed to the SE Compensator on my 09 Ultra and it gets rid of the starter clunk all together. It may or may not be your problem, but if you change to the SE compensator it will get rid of the starter clunk.
Good place to start with the compensator, but many on this site still run their stocker comp, and are getting by. I for one, and I have the upgrade, just haven't decided to do it yet.
Yes upgrade to SE compensator sprocket, my budy did it and it fixed problem, they have replaced mine and added springs last year, I will upgrade to SE parts soon...
