I removed the stock junk and secure my bags for under $10.00 with the following setup:
(2) washers, (1) clevis pin (1) hitch pin
You can't get them off from the outside like the stock ones and they are quick release too. If I'm in a really bad area, I can just take the bags in the room.
Since you leave them empty and unlocked, they are no more secure against theft than stock - unless you pull them every night. Even locking pins aren't all that good in you leave the lids unlocked, as it makes it pretty quick and easy to unbolt the mounts from the frame (the lids get in the way a bit if the bag is closed).
When we travel, I try to get ground floor rooms and park right outside.
