I'm currently recovering from abdominal surgery and will be off the bike two months. I purchased a genuine "Battery Tender" http://batterytender.com/ from an ebay dealer for $27.95 shipped to tide me over till I can ride again.
It's working so good I ordered another one from the same seller. There are some on there for $24.95 shipped.
1.Fill the tank full of quality fuel and stabilizer, that way the tank will not rust.
2.Change your engine oil
3.Put a battery tender on
4.If possible lift the bike so that the tires are not on the ground.
5.Cover the bike but not with plastic i.e cotton cover.
6.Crack open a beer (Canadian not one of those American near beers)
7.Relax
I believe the topic has been covered, but I would add that another reason to lift the bike, if not riding for a while, is for the spring on the jiffy. The weight can cause the spring to sprung.
