If you visit "Wheels Through Time" allow yourself plenty of time. There are so many bikes. and you could spend 30 minutes looking at each one.

I was up there Oct 10-14th. I would go with Marysville. We stayed just outside of Gatlinburg and even with the bypass, traffic could be very heavy at times. As stated above, dress in layers and peel off or add as conditions warrant. We really enjoyed the Foothills Parkway, the Dragon, and especially the BRP into the Maggie Valley. You can't go wrong, the riding is fantastic.

Heyyy, just did this loop last wkend. I have included a few pics of the mountains. The colors are starting to peak at 3,000/4,000 ft. Its already turning brown at 5,000 ft. The local news said the peak for colors in the smokies is about the next 10 days. Great area to ride my favorite color loop this time of year.

Winter riding in the Smokies can be a gamble whn it comes to temps. I have rode up there in november when it was in the high 60's as well as when the highs only got into the 40's. As far as rentals I have rented from the dealer in Pigeon Forge and it went without a flaw. It is a small dealer but I was more than happy with them. As far as traffic in and around Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge it is only bad in June July and October besides those times it is no different than riding in any average size town plus there is more to do than being stuck out in the sticks.
