So I just read the headlight flashing modulator post. No I don,t have one and tend to think of them as not good for all the reasons mentioned. That being said I do have a flashing taillight modulator. It only come on when the brake is on.I,d like to know what others think of this on their motorcycles?? Open up thanks.
California Vehicle Code permits tail light flasher in the following statute.
CVC25251.5(c) Any stop lamp or supplemental stop lamp required or permitted by Section 24603 may be equipped so as to flash not more than four times within the first four seconds after actuation by application of the brakes. (Then must go solid.)
CVC24603. Every motor vehicle that is not in combination with any other vehicle and every vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles shall at all times be equipped with stop lamps mounted on the rear as follows:
(a) Every such vehicle shall be equipped with one or more stop lamps.
I have a BAL-1 tail lamp. It has many choices, of which, only 4 are DOT compliant and they all end with a steady on. Since I installed it 1 1/2 years ago I've notices that cars following me slow down earlier and give more distance at a stop than with the stock setup (excluding the occasional moron who isn't going to get it no matter what you do.)
The reason I went with DOT compliant was that I used to ride with a group on a regular basis and didn't want to annoy the people behind me. I get good results giving everyone else the same courtesy so I don't change it to flash constantly.

I bought a kit with both head light and tail light modulator. The tail light modulator flashes four times then goes solid. I think the tail light modulator is well worth it. When ever I am riding with a group I get comments like boy is that thing annoying after a while but you really notice it, from people riding behind me - tells me it's working.
The head light modulator I installed but don't often use (you switch it on with the high beam switch - and a light sensor deactivates it at night). My summer mesh jacket is Hi Vis - I think that is a far better alternative to front on visability. Some recent studies have shown Hi Vis, and even light colors to a lesser extend, significantly reduce the likelyhood of getting hit by a car. I notice the police riders wear it all the time now and even the guys in the cars wear it when it is overcast.
