Default Lifter symptoms?

I have an 07 RKC with 36000+ miles. Seems lately the normal engine noise that we know they all make is getting louder. Seems a little more tapping than it should be making. Don't know if it's just in my head or if something is going south. I read after doing a search that someone said the manual recommends the lifters be changed between 25 and 35000 miles. Is this right? Does what I'm describing sound like like a lifter problem? I did recently switch to a K&N filter. Could this cause me to hear more engine noise? I previously had the SE Harley filter with my SE air cover.

Sounds like lifters to me. The indy I used to work for used to say to replace them every 30k... but he was full of **** as a Christmas turkey.

First I've heard of needing to replace them, they're roller lifters. I had mine out just a few miles miles short of 60,000 and the indy helping me do my work said he never replaces them....

Make sure your air filter screws, the 3 that are under the outer cover, are tight and not rattling around. Although I doubt they could make that much noise over the engine.

It is probably more to do with normal wear in the valve train causing the bit more of noise you hear. May be less lifters and more rocker arms or valve guides. Unless its really banging I don't think there would be a problem. If you have done regular oil/filter changes at hopefully much less than the 7500 mile mark then there should be no abnormal wear.

I have always followed the service manual intervals and I've got a good local indy that I take it to. I use Mobile 1 syn. Have it serviced every 5000 miles. The bike is running great but does seem to be a bit noisier, but it is the same familiar noise just seems a bit louder. I'm gonna ride it and not worry about it unless like you say it really starts banging.

Check your y pipe behind the rear cylinder.
Last week I thought I lost a lifter on my 15,000 mi RKC.
It ended up being a crack in the y pipe.
You might have to take the rear heat off to find a crack.
Dealer says very common.
He keeps 10 in stock at all times.
Good luck.

Just from personal experience only... when I went from a stock air box to the SE setup, I noticed alot of noise as well, and come to find out in certain situations you can hear the injectors clacking open/shut... alot of noise...Ive since gotten used to it.

Some Dino oil might help you out to. Some say the syn's make them talk to you more on that top end. I don't run the syn's so I can't tell you from experience. I have also heard of running 3 quarts of Syn and 1 quart of a good stabilizer like lucas. Might be worth a try at your next interval.
