Default 2011 FLTRU vs 2010 FLHTC

I am tempted to trade my 2010 Electra Glide Classic for a 2011 Road Glide Ultra. My wife says do it. Dealer will give me $15,000 for the EGC (Road Glide is $24,051.95). I've installed a few options, such as the Cyclesmith 14" bars, floorboard extensions, and rear light module (turn signals are red, and on all the time).

Several questions I'd like to throw out, since I've come to learn the advice via this forum is invaluable:

1. I am using the stock EGC seat with adjustable backrest (I had the L5-S1 vertebrae fused when I was in the military). Is the Road Glide as comfortable as the EGC? Will I need a backrest on the Road Glide?

2. Will the floorboard extensions (courtesy of Harley Goodies. a terrific company) from my EGC work on the Road Glide? Will they even be necessary?

Any other constructive advice or comments are appreciated.

Well regarding the seat, they updated them for 2011 so it's suppose to be more comfy, I know someone who has a '11 SERGU and he's very impressed with the new seat, I've only sat on one but was alot more comfortable than my stock RKC seat. If I were you i'd keep the backrest as it will fit the 11. The frame hasn't changed from 10 to 11 so your extension will work and be needed just as much, just remember you know have lower fairings.

One thing I know and that is if you are over 6' the Road Glide is more comfortable, From all that I have spoken about this with it seems to be the rule. Do you feel a little closed in on the EG ? If so you will feel more wide open with the RG , the seat you may need a backrest ? I am thinking of trading my ULTRA in is yours an ULTRA ? I have been trying to see what they will give me for it? I have all the Ultra extras( Including Wire Wheels which was an option on 2010 models) and have seen from a NADA book I should get about $21K for it? Your dealer would not give you any more then $15K gets me so worried, you pay so much for them when you buy them but they give very little in Trade-in value amazing ?? Sorry to rob your thread a little I wish you all the best in your trade , If you could post how your deal goes if you do it ? Thanks

It's ironic, I'm exactly 6' tall. And current bike is a Classic, not Ultra.

I don't want to have to replace the handlebars on the Road Glide - the Cyclesmiths on my EGC are a big improvement over the stock bars, comfort-wise.

I will definitely post results of this whole affair, which has me appreciating my wife more than ever on the one hand, and has given me a twinge of guilt on the other.

Two different guys can sit on the same two seats and come up with different opinions on which one is more comfortable. Getting the seating position right is essential, especially for those of us who have had spine problems and fusions.

I don't want to cause any trouble or **** you off but, I think you need to try a few more dealerships. That really doesn't sound like deal to me. As you may know I got my FLTRU last week. My dealer gave me $14600 for my 2009 Heritage. She had 11,500 miles on her with stage 1 with Thunderheader and assorted chrome bits. Unless you got a bunch of miles on your EGC I would think it would be worth more... I personally think 16 - 17 would be closer to the money.
The dealer also threw in about $500 in extras, like a second headset, chrome bag guards and the turn, brake light gismo all installed.
Its up to you, but I think you need to try at least 2 or 3 more dealers...

1. I went from an 09 EGC to an 11 RGU. Take the backrest off the EG and move it to your RGU. It will work. I don't use mine much because the bucket on the stock seat is deeper then the 09-10 EG models. I find the seat more comfortable also.

2. Yes, floorboard extensions will fit. The bike is essentially the same as far as girth, so if you needed/liked floorboard extensions, well you will probably want them for the RGU.

Other advice. Ride the bike first. You may not like the Roadie. I am right at 6' and get a little buffeting wind noise on each side of my head. I will address with a different shield eventually. Otherwise, perfect riding machine IMO. I had 25K on my EGC when I traded it and got 14K. So I honestly don't think you are doing to bad. Course you could try to sell it yourself and get more, but may be holding that bike till next spring. My old EGC is still sitting on their showroom floor. Strip your old bike of everything that you think you will want on your new one or that you can sell. You are not getting anything for that stuff on trade. Also: Do not go back to the dealer and see your old friend... Everytime I see my old bike, I think of the places it took me and the wife... and feel bad for trading it.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I asked for it, so opinions that differ from mine, or opinions that spark ideas I hadn't thought of before, definitely won't **** me off.

In fact, advice to check with other dealers seems sound to me. I currently live in Texas, moved here because of a new job, but my wife and son live in Knoxville until he graduates from high school. So if I do this deal, I'll be riding to TN for Thanksgiving and getting the Road Glide from Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson, then will ride it back to TX. So that gives me time to check dealers in the San Antonio area.

Dave at Smoky Mountain already said the dealership would remove the floorboard extensions and install them on the new bike, and that he didn't think the adjustable backrest would be a problem, either.

Worst case scenario is I don't make the trade, I spend Thanksgiving with my family, and I enjoy the ride back to Texas. Not a bad deal either way.

1. I would get the backrest if you are used to having one. I have one and would miss it a lot.

2. Yes, I put Harley Goodies extension on my RGU.

I think the SE RGU has a heated seat, so I don't think it is the same seat as the regular RGU. It looks different too.
