The rotor contact surface is attached to the inner hub with pressure washer rivets, allowing some "float" between the 2 components when pad pressure is applied, resulting in better brake performance, lighter weight, less heat, reduction in brake noise, longer pad life & they look cool!
My street glide had a squeal in the front brake that would raise the hair on the back of my neck. After several attempts by my dealer I bought two sets of Lyndal pads and solved the problem. I did no need to replace the rotors.
I have the squeal, and have learned to live with it. Rotors will be replaced when the front pads go out. In the mean time, I'm still trying to decide which set of highway pegs I want. I've only been thinking about it for 16,000 miles. Maybe I'll figure it out before my cross country trip next week.
Try these guys. FYI It is cheaper to buy them individually rather than sets...not sure why, but it is. They are very good quality! I always get asked where I got'em.

I disagree completely. One of the first upgrades to my 06EGC was floating rotors on the front.
Changing your brake pads may have improved your situation but you would have got an additional 30% improvement had you added floating rotors to the mix...
I got a newb question since we are talking about rotors.
I am planning on putting floating rotors and better pads on this winter. I was looking at the fully polished rotors. Yeah they are pricey, but I bet they would look nice Are these just for show? I can't see how these wouldn't get all scratched up with the new pads. Do they make pads specifically for these types of rotors?
Kern:
Polished non-floating rotors DO look great, but the area where the pads contact lose their shine. Polished rotors are preferable to chromed rotors as the chrome can crack and peel. I am not aware of any special pads for polished rotors.
No doubt that floating rotors stop the squeal and are superior to the stock rotors.
