Default Have you used this tire?

It's time for new tires on my 2010 ultra limited, and I appreciate for any info about this tire: Avon AV72 Cobra Rear Tire (.
The size is the same as the Dunlop D407 180/65B-16, but I am not sure it is the same.
In addition, any PROs and CONs about this tire would be helpful.
Just trying to save some bucks over the HD Dunlop.
Thanks much in advanced for any info.

I've got a 2009 Ultra and won a pair of Avon tires at Americade in 2009, they are cobra AV71 and AV72. They were still in development at the time but I got my hands on them this past season when they finally released them and put them on. I have about 2500 miles on them so far and I like them a lot. I like to take corners fast and lean till the foot boards scrape and these tires stick like glue. I suspect they may not last as long as the Dunlops which I got 10,000 out of the back, the front still had tread but it was a D407 and wore terrible. No doubt the ride is better with the Avon's but part of it may be due to the crappy D407 and cupping issue. I priced them at Americade this year and they would have been around $550 for the set installed. So far I'd buy them again before buying Dunlops. I'm not sure if they will last as long because I think the rubber is softer but it is a trade off, better traction for less life. Again, tire life is just my specualtion but I'll find out!

I have a 2009, changed wheels and tires, running the cobras front and rear. Now the rear is a 17 x 200 like how it rides and sticks, not real happy with life, only got 9000 miles out of first one. Have read where guys are getting in the mid teens with the dunnys...........

Alwasy got 7-9,000 out of the metzler 880s on my 04. Hope this helps.

Avon is a good tire but wear very fast on the back of heavy ultras, Best I ever got was about 9k and that was watch the tire pressure real close

Thanks much for all the info.
I currently have 10K on my original Dunlop rear tire, and I think I still can put on at least a couple more K, but I'd like to shop for a new set of tires now, so I can change them when the day come.
I guess I should stay with the Dunlop tires, but they are kinda expensive.
I hope Dunlop can sell HD tire as low price as Dunlop tire for metric bike. What the difference!

I've also found that Dunlop has this tire: DUNLOP AMERICAN ELITE 180/65 16 rear tire.

What is the difference between this tire and the Dunlop D407 180/65B-16?

I don't know if it's the same as an Elite 3, but if so, it's an excellent tire! Much better than the factory originals.

I bought an American Elite for my 09 Ultra. It's a new tire, and we don't know much about it except that it's supposed to be even better than the Elite 3.

I have 11K miles on my D407 rear and I expect the American Elite to last a little longer. 15K maybe?

Check Jake Wilson prices. It's now at $152.99 with free shipping. I used a $20 off coupon when I bought it in September but coupons don't work on tires anymore.

I'm anticipating a set of American Elite's when I replace mine this coming summer. At last inquiry the Elite's were still being backordered or at least the narrow whitewall was. I currently have 11000 mile on the original 407/408 combo and they appear to have a few thousand more miles in them. Tires and oil postings usually get some significant attention.

Based on information from the Avon tyre website, the tread-depth is not as good as the Dunlop's (8.3/32nds on the Avon, 10/32nds on the D407).

I've used Avon Venom's in the past (previous motorcycles), but would be concerned with tire wear since the Touring bikes are a lot heavier than a Softtail.

The new Dunlop American Elite (Elite 3 for 2009 & newer basically) looks like a really good tire with plenty of tread depth. Might want to give them a look-see.

Hope this helps.
