Wife and I are visiting Vegas next week, looking to do a rental and ride from Vegas to Laughlin to Hoover back to Vegas. Anyone tell us what kind of weather we can expect? Mountain passes/elevation issues?
We can adapt our time, but really want to just do a bit of a day ride on a rental, so this looked like a cool trip.
I'd check with the rental people for local knowledge- I live in Phoenix.
1. it will be likely about 15ş for a high at about 3 pm- it will feel warmer in the sun, as soon as you go into the shade...so bring flexible riding gear. chaps, gloves etc. Mornings are quite cool. Sunscreen will be needed as well.
2. It still gets dark early- be aware this is the time of year when drivers are juggling cell phones, shopping lists and may be drinking. We have had about 1 a day ( reported) drivers turning left and killing riders here in PHX. Usually right at dusk. The setting sun blinds westbound drivers
Red Rock Canyon just outside of vegas is a real treat.............
Rented bikes there last month. Nov. 3rd we rode to the valley of Fire and to Overton Nv.. Went to Red Rock Canyon on Nov. 4th. Went to the damn on the 5th. It was a bit warmer 4 weeks ago. If your heading west at sunset it does get blinding so be care full....
10 day forecast says low 60's F, for a high. It's getting down into the 30's at night now.
Should be a good ride once you get out of town a bit. Fair warning, pretty heavy (and fast) traffic on the 215 and south valley getting onto the 95 (which will take you to the dam), so if you're renting different bikes than normal, be careful.
If you have time, stop at Mr D's on the west side of town, on the corner of Oakey and Rainbow. Great biker bar.
Have fun.
Oh, and since you're heading south, you could make a loop and hit the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, NV off of I-15 (Google map it). Good biker bar on weekends.
Temps posted in the 40's last ten days are abnormal. Mid 60's this weekend. Red rock is a short loop ride, mostly used for hiking and rock climbing. Valley of fire State Park is a great desert ride in Lake Mead recreational area. Great riding. Good smooth pavement two lane road through great desert. Places to stop, rest, get refreshments if needed. After riding Valley of fire, head south along Lake Mead to Boulder City where you can visit Boulder Dam. Good day ride. Small fee to enter Lake Mead area keeps traffic down. Near the dam is the recently completed Pat Tillman/ ?!! bridge over the Colorado River. Second highest bridge in USA. Haven't ridden across it yet. Oatman is a long ride from Las Vegas. Check the mileage before you go. Have nothing good to say about Laughlin nor the ride out there. Mostly flat, straight highway until you turn off to Laughlin. Best riding is backroads to Mojave Desert Preserve and park headquarters in Kelso, Ca. Tortise preserve so few people go out there. Great rural desert riding, a few rough patches of pavement. Weather can be anything next week. Usually sunny if not warm. Rain can happen. If you do get rained out, this is a great city to spend time indoors.
