Default 99 UC EG red engine light

Red engine light randomly comes on and goes off. No issues or problems other than that. Do I have to take it to the dealer to find out what the problem is or can I check something on my own?

I have a 01 and when mine came on it was because of the battery cables not being tight enough. Check your cables and go from there

If it comes on and stays on, you have a problem. If it comes on and blinks when you turn on the ignition, you have stored trouble codes from a past problem that went away. You can check the stored codes using a sequence of turning off, turning on the ignition switch and then counting the light flashes....This is outlined in the service manual...Most of the times on bikes of your vintage stored codes are from the cam or crank positions sensor...If the bike kicks back when trying to start, it will usually throw one of these codes and store it...After 50, restarts, the codes clear themselves.

In your case, if the light just flickers when riding, I wouldn't worry about it.

My '99 EGC sometimes does the same thing , usually around initial start-up. I attribute it to the sensors picking up high readings in my fuel/air mixture. once the engine warms, it stops.
My fuel system is the old Magnelli F.I. and is REAL particular, I have an especially tough time in the winter even getting her started. Some day I'm just gonna rip it all off the bike & go carburated!

Thanks Gas and XXX, I will check the cables and count the flashes.

I get that at start up once in awhile if it back fires. My dealer clears it for free. It is caused by the by the crank position sensor as stated before. Should stay on about 8 seconds and then go out. I finally start my bike with my left hand and keep my right hand in my lap. If I touch the throttle during start up is when I have a problem.
