Avoid salt...when the salt truck comes around I know winter is here and the bike goes to sleep
+1 They use that green chloride crap on our roads. Although it is killing me to have it parked I will wait until after the roads are clean and salt free.
Hey, that's the reason we all own them right? I wouldn't trade all the bikes I've owned and the memories I have for any amount of money. I'm certainly of the mentality that you can't take your money with you so you might as well get rid of it while you can. Despite all the good times, I have no misconceptions about the fact that owning a bike WILL cost you more money than it returns. Not saying it's money wasted by any means. I just don't understand the mentality of not enjoying the bike for fear of it losing value. I thought enjoyment was the whole reason you bought one in the first place.
Enjoyment is, you're right.
I just don't enjoy riding around on a rusty POS.
It's pride, really, and that's just one in a long list of personal failings I need to work on.
I'll try to do better.

If you're happy with your ride and what you do with it, that's what it's all about. No pride or personal failings involved. Have fun with it however you do and ride it till the wheels fall off (not from road salt though).

When it's dry out the salt is like a fine dust. It sticks. Ask your wife about the dust on the coffee table. You can't blow it off, and it doesn't fall off. It's stuck. And on the bike it gets into little places you can't clean and does it's damage.
I've seen some horrific examples of what salt dust can do.
My bike will not be exposed to that. No way. I'd rather walk than ruin the bike.
