Not long after purchasing my 2010 SG i replaced the stock seat with the HD Sundowner. Soon I noticed that the bolt on the seat bracket had chipped the paint on my rear fender. I remedied that by placing a piece of leather over the bolt. Now I see that the seat has worn the clearcoat on my rear fender and the tops of the side covers.I can't believe the MOCO would sell a part that does this much damage when used as intended.I wish I would have never seen this POS seat.I like the rider position and OL definitely likes the passenger seat but I urge anyone considering this seat to reconsider. It aint worth the damage it does to your bike.Any recommendations on a similar seat that has a seat pan that actually fits the bike would be appreciated.
Yep, been there done that! I swap out seats all the time and when I installed the Sundowner I noticed it messed up the fender. So much for a solo seat.
I think the damage even occurs from stock seats. It used to bother me too. Too late now, but there are clear protectors you can use. My dealer scratched my road king rear fender installing something. I was pissed, but they placed plastic strips on the fenders to keep the scratches at bay. My new bike has the sundowner seat and the same rub marks you are writing about. It's part of the joy of owning a Harley. At least replacement parts are so affordable.
I ordered one for my 09. When I saw that it is for 08 (old frame) and up (new frame), I was skeptical. When it arrived it had no pop rivets to hold the tab to the seat, so I had to get some low headed screws to hold it on. The screws were hitting the rear fender ever so slightly. I also noticed that it was sitting on the tops of my side covers. I used it once and put it on the shelf. I just dont see how it can be used on the old frame and the new frame. I bought a 2011 stock touring seat and turned them both over to compare. The seat pans are completly different.

It seems as though the seat messes up the fender under it as well and also the chrome dash too. I am going to polish my fender out and try to get a piece of felt and put it on the bottom of the seat, and now maybe a piece of leather for the seat tab too, but don't know what to do with the dash. It's always something I guess.
And if you have an 09 or 10 FLHX or FLTRX built before March 17, 2010 and the vehicle is under warranty, then the dealer has to repair it under warranty with the kit under service bulletin M1273
