I pulled the trigger during Sturgis for a kolckwerks. It does exactly what they say it will and is the best money I've spent on the bike. greatly increased the stability of the ride. I recomend them to anyone. Not cheap tho.

My vote would be for Clark custom shields, have had mine for about 6 months and love it. Good people to deal with and their shields are top notch.

I agree. Great personal service. Have bought several shields from them and really like the half moon shield for winter. Seems to keep more wind off the hands.

I've tried four different 6 to 7 inch shields.... I don't think you can beat a 6.5 Clearview with recurve. Looks good and works great!

First off, as others mentioned, get a polycarbonate (e.g., Lexan) material. It is safer. Next, it's looks versus performance. The taller the windshield generally, the higher the wind block (and the less cool it looks). The critical factor here is where the wind breaks in relationship to your head. There is an area of turbulence between the still air behind the windshield, and the smooth flowing air that passes above the windshield. This turbulent air is what is coming off the windshield, downstream. If this area of turbulence catches your helmet you'll experience the 'bobble head' effect. (Bobble-head dolls as you know rock their heads on a spring). The air is churning, and rough. If this turbulence catches just the top of your head/helmet, the effect will be slight (you might feel like you need glasses). If the turbulence catches enough of your head/helmet, the shaking effect will be very pronounced. In the worst cases, at even moderate speed (40 or 50 MPH) you can experience enough turbulent air against your noggin to make focusing your eyes on the road difficult. Not to mention head ache, stiff neck, etc., after a longer ride at higher speed.

If you get a shorter windshield, you can 'focus' the turbulence lower on your body so that your helmet's in clear air. In this case, as far as your head goes, it will be like riding without a windshield. You'll get a lot of wind noise, but only suffer 'bobble head' to the extent your helmet creates it itself. Of course, your beard (if you got one) might blow up your nose or tickle your eyes (this is annoying), but that's another issue...

There are so many variables, it's impossible to guarantee what will happen with a shorter windshield versus a longer one. Seat height, upper body length, posture, the distance from you to the windshield etc. all play a part. But generally speaking, a taller windshield will move the zone of turbulent air higher.

Finally, a big factor is whether you want to look over the top edge of the windshield, or through it. Obviously this will be the deciding factor on whether to go 'tall' or 'short'. If you elect to look 'through', go tall enough on the shield the turbulence clears the top of your helmet. If you want to look over it, don't go so tall the turbulence will hit your head.

Case in point: I'm 6-feet tall. I like to look 'through' the windshield as I only use it in Winter when it's cold and I want to 'hide' behind it. I bought a memphis shades batwing, and their 9" windshield. I ride an '04 RK Custom with a Brawler seat. With the fairing adjusted all the way forward (upright, i.e., the brackets angle forward and back), I still get just a touch of head-shake with my helmet. I have to scrunch down to duck it (gets uncomfortable after a few miles). So I just ordered the 12" windshield, hoping it will allow me to sit up. I tried angling the windshield back, by adjusting the brackets, but it was worse that way.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps someone out.

Alan
