Long Ride Shields (LRS) X-Stream 9" on the 09 bargeGlide since LRS came out with them. I have tried others but always go back to the X-Stream. No buffeting or turbulence at all.
I think of these as consumables and have a spare on hand when needed due to scuffing or cracking. The price is right...
Does looking over or through have safety advantages or is it mainly a rider preference thing?
Tim
Tim the best height is to have the top of the shield at the base of your nose/upper lip so you look OVER the shield an inch or two. A good shield will take the wind over your head-- especially a shield with a flip at the top.
Looking over is the safe way so you don't have a rain/dirt/bug spattered view trying to look through one.

I look over my RK shield and through my Deluxe shield.
MUCH prefer looking over...mainly because of rain (I always seem to find area rain clouds). It's awful trying to look through a shield in most rain showers/storms...especially when you're riding into the sun. I do wear a ff with shield though, but the helmet shield is easy to clear with my glove squeegie or just putting my face on one side of the shield to catch the wind. I've tried products that are supposed to help "shed" the rain too... Plexus, Pledge, the H-D product, Rejex, Kleerz, etc...darn rain drops just sit there impervious to movement...even at speeds as high as 80 mph.
The only positive I've found for the tall shield is that I have zero issues with turbulence. Get it every now and again on my RK. I have the medium height H-D shield on it.
I still have the ability to duck down a bit if I want to look through for whatever reason.
The one that came on my 01 is about 2 inches above my line of sight if I sit up and not slouch. I measured it from the trim to the top and it measures 12 or 13 inches. It's probably the original one cause it has scratch swirls and rock dings. I want to replace it and been reading all the threads in the search function. I get a lot of turbulence with this one in my face and it drys my contacts out and after about 40 or 50 miles I get to where I almost can't see. I don't get any head buffeting though and my wife says she is pretty much out of the wind with it. But I want to look over the windhsield but I don't want to mess with her ride either. I'm 5'9" and I thinking about going with an 8" flip up. We both also wear half helmets cause we both get too hot in a 3/4 or full helmet. Is my thinking sound?
I replaced my stock shield after a trip at night, the bugs were so bad I had to keep stopping to clean my shield! (Couldn't see over it). I'm 5'10", I went with the LRS 9" classic, but the wind was hittng me right in the forehead. So I bought the 10" classic and it's perfect, wind goes right up over my head and I can see over the WS. It's amazing the differance an inch can make.

This might work for you. It did for me. Take the lower fairings off if you have them. Install the fork mounted wind deflectors.
