Stick with the factory plugs. Buy the gold or platinum if it makes you feel better to spend the extra cash. I just put in the HD platinums for $8 ea I think. Runs the same as it did with the stockers but I feel better Different brand plugs aren't going to be any better and may throw a code and turn on the check engine light.
I have just put in Autolight 4164. Seems to be OK. The FIX MY HOG DVD says HD plugs only. Not sure why?
Some of the platinum plugs will set a code in some of these bikes because of the ion sensing in the ignition system that senses secondary ignition resistance to retard timing when there is a ping detected.
Some people just don't get it do they Glide?
Gents....Ion Sense.....resisitance specific to H-D plugs and wires measured by the ECM, an 80 vdc secondary charge sent to the plugs to measure that resistance....if another brand plug or wire has a different resistance value that H-D.....the measurement will report back to the ECM differently. if you have driveability issues...try H-D plugs and wires.......this aint like the oil thing!
I hear ya there and then we see a post about a code set and what does is mean.
Hmmm, aluminum heads, razor sharp threads,I change mine every spring or 10,000 miles. HD or champion,I almost got caught up in that fancy spark plug thing, stock motor ,stock plug simply.thanks for the reminder I am gonnachange them today
I could be incorrect here - but isn't all of the spark plug debate a bunch of bullshit?
The ignition system is what generates the power for the spark - the plug (regardless of manufacturer) is going to give the same spark... As long as gap is properly set.
My take on it is this - all plugs must be built to a certain spec to meet whatever guidelines are in place for sparkplugs. Quality Control then becomes the determining factor... A $20 plug may have better quailty control when it's built - but does overall performance increase over a $4 plug? Prolly not. Now if you start changing ignition coils & such...that arguement could be changed...but I would still believe a $7.00 plug would do the job.
