Default Clamp Fork Holding Tool....

HD wants $79 for the tool. Any tricks I can use to remove the fork tube plug on my 2010 SG. It gets torque at 70 LBS so its going to be tight. Sure hate to bugger up the shaft in a vise (which I would never do).

I was thinking lowering the fork in the triple trees to expose the head so I can install a crescent wrench, re-tighten the triple tree fork clamp and then loosen the plug. Only problem with that is holding the front end with no tire while tugging on the wrench. Then the problem is when I re-torque the cap to 70 LBS I don't have the proper tool for the plug to use my torque wrench. WTF! Any tricks to this job you could provide me with?

and the instructions said only basic tools are needed to lower your bike haha

i've always used the triple tree to hold the fork.

before you lower, have you decided on springs or oil...there is a nice photo in another post of a guy's front fender...when he bottomed out his forks and caused alot of damage.

if you are in PHX, I have a loose triple tree that you could use as a clamp.
it's not that big a deal to torque the plug, more pushing the plug down ( against the springs) to get the threads to start.

good to have a pal for that

Pull it and put it in a lathe and remove and install the plug using a center. Easy 1 man job.

Here's a $3 solution I used. a 2 inch PVC boot slid right over the lowers on my forks, and I just grabbed it with the vice just tight enough to hold it. 1 1/2 might fit over the down tubes, but i dunno.

I picked up a 49mm top triple clamp(98 RM250) off ebay for $20 that will clamp up with my vice.

I made a clamp to hold my fork tubes. I took an old piece of angle aluminum and fastened a wood handscrew clamp to it. I then carved out the clamping end and covered it with rubber. Put it in the vise and you are good to go. Will hold to do all your fork work. This is what the clamp looked like.

I used the lower triple tree to hold the tube and turned the forks to the stop to tighten it. Stand in front of the bike and it won't tip when you pull on the wrench.
