Default Help: right side control switch

Thsi right side control box is giving me hell.

On disassembly a small copper shim fell out of the bottom of the control box. There wasnt one on the left side.

Whats this for and where does it go?

Ive got 5 of the 6 chrome switch covers on with no breakage. The right turn signal cover doesnt want to cooperate. Ive had it on twice and back off because it isnt snapping on right, the spring keeps pushing it over before I can get it snapped on.

I think I better call it quits for the night. Tomorrow is another day.

Little copper shim goes between the brake light switch and the housing to hold it in place. You will have a hard time getting the housing closed if you don't shim the brake lever open. You will also ruin your brake light switch, which you really don't want to do....trust me.

OK bmcgc, first my dad would tell you that you just aren't holding your tongue right.

Here is the best I can do for you. When you took out the brake light switch, the copper shim goes between the brake switch housing and the control switch housing. If you are looking at the lower switch housing with the brake switch installed, the shim will go in between the switch housing and the brake switch in the back of the housing (actually the front of it, but the back as you are holding it). I know that sounds stupid, but it is the best way I can explain it.

Slip in from the top with the fold towards the top, the shim is going to keep the brake switch "squared up" in the housing so that it isn't being pinched when your brake lever is released.

Hope this helps, if you don't understand it shoot me a PM and I will get on the phone with you to try and explain it better.

Hopefully this will help you out. It's an exploded view of your right handle bar switches. I will try the link once I post and if it doesn't work I will try to PM ya.

Back at it this afternoon.

It looks like the shim goes between the back of the brake switch and the throttle side of the bracket.

There wasnt one on the clutch switch. Was there susposed to be one there?

Ive got some homework to do this afternoon so Im only going to work on this about an hour today. Nice weather forecasted for Saturday so we want to ride. I hope the internal wiring is going to be easier than these switch boxes.

Ive never changed master cylinders or bled mc brakes. I havent even looked that far ahead yet.

Right side back together. I was about to set it down and try again later but the whole mess fell into place all at once. Nothing I did, it did it all by itself.

I had a hell of a time getting that small clip on the throttle lock thumb screw, the same guy that designed the switch caps must have had a hand in that.

The curved metal piece that clamps against the grip to lock the throttle looks like it just sits on the thumb screw and is held inplace by the housing and the grip. I dont see any way to attach it to the thumbscrew.

Is that correct.

Yes that's correct. Make sure your brake light works properly. That's the most common screw up.
Surprised no one said it yet, but if you are going to tackle some of these jobs yourself, a shop manual is priceless.

Ive got a shop manual, that was my first purchase. Sometimes advice from those who have already been down the road carries alot more weight than the printed word.
