Hi Guys,
I'm getting my saddlebags repainted and am I'm thinking about getting my latches powdercoated at the same time. I found a guy to do the coating and removed the latches. I was looking at the latches and it appears that the only piece I'd need to have coated is the outer trim piece with the reflector in it. My question is do the guts of the latch show through behind the trim piece or can I just have that main trim piece powdercoated and be done with it?
I'm not sure what it is exactly you're asking. On bikes with color-matched saddlebag latches (SG's for example) the only color-matched part is the saddlebag latch plate (what you refer to as the trim piece). When my bike was repainted, I bought the HD primered latch plates, p/n 91143-06BEO, and had the painter color-match them to the bags; they've held up well/no problems.

Thats pretty much what I needed. I have the latches apart and they are basically two pieces, the latch plate and the actual latching mechanism. Because I didn't look closely at them when they were closed before pulling them off, I wasn't sure how much, if any of the guts show through from behind the plate. It sounds to me like the latch plate covers pretty well and that should be all I need to get blacked out.
Heat the back of the latch cover with a heat gun or torch to easily remove the reflector. I had a pair done and I caution you put screws in the lock holes as mine were wallowed out when they sand blasted the inside of the cover, even though I wrote "no paint".
here's another option - - scuff the chrome, remove the lock, mask the reflector, and paint them yourself.....with the right paint, it will look amazing....NAPA sells krylon, which is great quality, or if you want more of a powder coat finish, use appliance epoxy....did mine myself, happy with the results, and no chips
I had mine coated and noticed that the top of the hinge shows above the cover plate. I'm thinking about just using touch-up paint and do the part that shows.
