thanks for posing this question, as I was thinking the same thing (about maintenance / scuffs etc.). Never been a fan of a black bike until I saw the denim black and I love it, and I am considering it for my next bike (this season hopefully)...
I don't like the denim black. What is great about the denim black is that lots of people do. The thing that I love about all harley bikes is that they have been personalized. I am a shiny paint and chrome guy. The blacked out look has some great looking bikes, but not for me. Get the denim black with power pak.
I had a vivid black road king, loved it but hated the scratches it showed from cleaning. It didn't matter how careful I was, the vivid black would scratch. I traded the king on a denim, black X and I love it. It takes me 30 mins at the most to clean it. Hot water and windex. I have 10K on it and it has scratches, but so did my vivid black king. They make touch up paint for the denim.
If you like the black denim it buy it, its your bike! If you have any other questions, send me a PM.
I have 60k on my 07 pewter denim SG & it still looks great. Very easy to care for & I actually give it a nice paste wax (done it ever since I bought it new) to give it that low luster look. I still get lots of compliments on the paint.
Before I bought my SG I was looking at the Night Train in Denim. I love the color. I ended up buying an '10 Denim Black Street glide instead. I never thought about how to clean it but like what has been said before a bit of windex and it is clean. The only issue I have had is when I wear my double front carhartts the rivet on my inner upper thigh occasionally hits the tank and leaves a small 'brass' mark or line (3/8" long) on the tank. However I suspect any paint would be affected by this. but a bit of elbow grease and some windex and it is gone.
Love mine! Low maintenance easy to clean with a soft cloth and Windex.
I think it looks Bad A$$ as well, and based on the feedback I get almost every time I'm out most people feel the same. It's quite an attention getter.
Go for it you won't regret it!
I have one denim bike and one scarlet red gloss. I like them both. If you are the kind of guy who'll get pissed every time you look at "that mark" and remember when that kid's basketball bumped the paint, then denim won't be for you.
If, on the other hand, you are comfortable with the fact that your bike will eventually get a patina showing that its for riding not showing, then you'll love it.
I use cheap @ss dish soap and she cleans up in about a minute. My denim bike looks meaner over time and I really like the look.
I'm on my second Denim Black bike. Had the Fat Bob for a couple of years, then moved up to the Road Glide. The color really grows on you. Haven't had any problems with the paint, wash the bike once and a while and blow dry it. Never an issue.
I have a very long rural gravel driveway, and the glossy finishes look like **** every time I leave the place during the summer. The Denim paint holds up better and doesn't show the dust as bad.
