Default 09 Road Glide handlebar change??

I'm in the process of changing from the stock bars to the new Road Glide Ultra pull back bars. I've discovered that the stock bars have a dimple to accommodate the control wiring harness. The new bars are designed for internal wiring and accordingly don't have the dimple to recessing the harness and allow the clutch/break lever clamp to close fully. Seems apparent that the control wiring harness on both the right and left side must run internally. The problem -- How to fish the wiring harness through the bars with a 12 pin connector on one side and the control actuators on the other side??? Do I need to cut and then splice the wires after I've fished them through the bars?? Help Please.......

The best way to do it is to remove the wire ends from the plug and fish them through the bars. I cut the stock loom cover off the wires and put shrink tubing over the wires so make the loom smaller. Use tie wire to pull the loom through and put the ends back in the plug.

This is not a complete description of the job. There are several steps to follow and procedures that can make it easier to complete.

If you need more advice, I can add more to the thread later. I'm sure others will have ideas too.

Steve

It's pretty easy to take the connectors apart and run the wires through the bars. If you have throttle by wire and heated grips it's a little more work but still possible. This may help you.

Buy a service manual befroe you start ANYTHING! It shows exactly how to remove the plug and in what order the wires go back in. I wired all of mine internally no problems. Here is a hint for you. I took the thick outside plastic off of the wire harness for each side and used baby powder to stick the inside of the handlebars up and the wires slid in alot better. Good Luck.

Default Mega Thanks~

A huge thanks to all who responded and provided the excellent insight. Also, the pictures were perfect and helped a ton. Fingers crossed I'll get the job done without too many "words". As a side note the dealer had told me approx $1,000 - 1,500 to do the change out. A crazy number but it is a pain to do. Many thanks again~

Default Molex connector??

One additional question -- The inside of the molex connector has a plastic shield covering the wires and only exposing the pins. Any ideas how to remove that covering so I can get to the half moon wire releases??? I've tried releasing the individual wire connectors through the small holes in the plastic cover but even with a pin/small drill bit/paper clip and can't budge even one of the twelve wires. Help Please??? Thanks again~

+1. As stifularson said use heat shrink to make diameter smaller and then baby powder to assist fishing thru bars. Take your time and walk away if you get frustrated (and you will)....

IMPORTANT - I believe a service manual is the first accessory a person should buy for their bike. Without it, you are flying blind. The SM has a chapter describing the plethora of different connectors on your bike and how to get them apart and back together. It's kind of like a puzzle game really. LOL

Default Molex connector removal

Thanks again for the help. Between the picts and description given on the web site given and a youtube search on "molex connector removal" I'm hoping to get the job done tonight. Fingers are crossed...
