Oh, I don't doubt you at all. I found I got better mileage by leaving it in 5th gear longer and keeping the revs up.
However, like iclick posted above, I also have spent some time tweaking my PC111 map in the cruise range for better mileage. That is a variable that may allow a bit lower rpm than the 2900-3300 rpm you suggest.
I'll give it a try when it warms up a bit.

I did a 4000 miler in September from Seattle through BC and home to Ala. High of 46 mpg in mountains and a low of 32 mpg on super slab @ 80mph. Averaged 38 mpg for the trip.

I have heard several of my fellow riders talking about how many miles per gallon they are getting (on each and every ride), and I always think to my self, "who cares?". It may just be me, but I didn't purchase my Bike for it's gas mileage. I purchased it to ride..... Would I ride less miles if I thought I was getting poor mileage, I don't think so.. I put 30,000 or so miles on my bike last year and enjoyed every gallon @30-40- 45MPG +/- depending on the wind direction and how fast it was blowing, or for that fact my speed...

Oh well, I guess it depends on the rider, oh yeah.... your mileage may vary..

The more mileage you get the less damage to the planet and the less dependence on foreign oil. It's not a money thing.

If you adjust your fuel for 20-30% throttle and 2500-3000 rpm that will improve your cruising fuel milage.

My 10 RGC stage 1 averages 33mpg. My riding is about half city half highway and I am not an "aggressive" rider. I've checked the plugs a couple of times and they show no sign of running rich.

I have an 09 Roadking Classic that I put Python pipes, ness air cleaner, woods cams and PCV and I get 35 city and highway. That's cruising on the highway at 80-85 and cranking it the rest of the time. On the ride to Sturgis going 75 the whole way I got 47 with these mods. My bike gets mad if I don't let it be heard.

Ride on

Why don't we just take the bicycle out on the next poker run, and that makes up for the difference between 30 & 38mpg?

Or you could just park yours & drive your Prius.

I ride an '08 Ultra and wish that I got 35-40 MPG. (Sometimes I think I get better mileage driving the Mustang than the H-D.) I have had the low fuel light come on in as little as 127 miles (started with a full 6-gallon tank). Usually the low fuel light is coming on at about 150-160 miles (takes 5+ gallons to fill it so I know the light is not coming on early with a bunch of gas still in the tank). This a a bone stock engine and exhaust. Every place I have ever taken it for tuning has said it is properly tuned.

All that being said, if I never leave 5th gear (cruise about 64 mph) my mileage gets much better. As soon as I go 65-70 and shift to 6th gear and my mileage drops drastically. When I bought the bike I expected 6th gear to act as an overdrive gear with better mileage. I was wrong. 6th gear will drain a gas tank in a heartbeat.
