i ordered one about a month ago for my SG. its a $40 thick rubber sticker. i got it because i thought it was gonna be a piece if metal, i was gonna sandblast a small logo on it for the "custom" look. when it showed up, to my disappointment its just a piece of rubber with a sticky back. the installation was simple. peal the stock one off, clean the surface and put the new one down. i think it looks good. would have been way cooler if i would have been able to etch it up.
AGREE, agree! The one for the SG is a cheap POS glorified thick sticker. I too had seen the metal ones. In fact, I actually HAD one of the metal ones for the SG with the tiny HD logo pattern on it. THAT was metal. So when I decided that the logo one was too much contrast to the black in an area where I didn't want that much contrast, I decided to go with the black one thinking that it too would be metal. Yeah, it'll likely stay on there with no problems, but it's crap. The black is not a deep black, fades early, can't really wax it, and even after months of being on the bike, the surface has a sticky/tackiness feel to it. Very cheap. HD f'd us on this one. Don't buy it. Only saving grace for me is people tend to look at other features of the bike and not this cheap console trim.
(sorry, no pics. my computer died and I have to grab Forum access when I can from elsewhere. power surges suck!)
I just got off the phone with my local dealer (Cowboy Harley of Beaumont Texas) and of course they don't have any inserts in stock of any kind.
I discussed it with them and like I said, if I order it in my name it's mine. However, she told me said she would order one for store stock and should have it in next Tuesday. That way i could see it and not own it.
I must say that I am very happy with my local HD Dealer. They have always treated me very well and do what it takes to make sure their customers always leave happy. I guess that I have spent enough time it the dealership that most of the crew there know me and my bike. Even when I call up to order a part there is never any hassel and they don't ask me to pre-pay anything.
Actually, there is nothing cheap looking or feeling about it. For HD accessories, it is pretty good stuff. Here is a pic of my 2010 RK with one installed.
Has anybody successfully ordered a stock replacement dash insert (the brushed aluminum one) from a dealer? Is it possible?
Yes you can get replacement inserts. The one for the FLHX ran about 30.00 when I was looking to do mine. I ended up doing mother of pearl instead. gave it a nice custom touch.
There is also a company that makes glass inserts that are sick as hell, but I cant remember their name right now.
I have this one installed on my '08. The original one was plastic. This one is formed from aluminum. It is a PITA to get centered but I used pieces of plastic to slide down the side to center it before pressing it in place!
It looks off to the right side. Better check again and realign.

Halffast
Does the black insert have "Ign, Acc & Off" on it ? It does look good.
