Default Starter Button Failure

While riding to work the other morning, my starter was trying to engage. Talk about making some noise. So as a quick fix I simply unplugged the starter solenoid from the side of the starter, so it couldnt turn on. A trip to the HD shop yesterday and I got a new starter button, cut the wires from the orginal button, and soldered the new switch in. As of now its working great. Bike is a 2001 FLHR with 55,000 miles. Mechanical failures have been as follows:

8000 Primary drive belt broke - under warranty - defective
38000 Cam making excessive noise (hard surface wearing off) - Big bore kit installed w/cams oil pump lifters the works, inner primary gasket replaced.
53000 Bushing for starter jackshaft replaced
54000 Starter button replaced

There has also been a couple sets of front brake pads, numerous rear tires, a couple front tires, and Ive had to replace the heal toe shifter twice, (they seem to strip out for some reason).

Kevin,

I've put a couple hundred thousand miles on my bikes over the past years and have never had to replace a heel toe shift or primary belt. Can't explain why it would happen to you. Damn, you'd think those tires would be covered under the warranty.

Botton on mine failed also. Had to relocate and rewire the relay. Relaocted to make access easier and maybe more airflow, aiding cooling of realy. Problem solved.

That's kind of coincidental that you should post about that. A coworker brought his latest ebay purchase to work with him yesterday for me to check out. It's an '87 883 with only 2400 miles on it. He hasn't ridden for about 25 years and even then it was enduro's. He asked me to start it up for him and I couldn't get the starter to disengage after I pushed the button. I beat the heck out of it with my thumb and it finally quit, scared the crap out of me. He's taking it to a local shop to have the thing totally gone thru. I told him to schedule that right away, noticed some things that needed attention, i.e. the oil tank was full to the top, etc.

Its a bummer when it does go down, but for the mileage it hasnt been all that bad. On a funny note, I recently repaired a Yamaha Venture Royale, (big heavy tourer), that had a starter engaging as soon as the ign was turned on. Turned out the starter solenoid was grounding on a chrome cover. When the guy picked it up he proclamied, "Thought I was going to have to put a Harley badge on it the way its been acting up". My reply, "Think nothing of it, I work on Yamaha's every day!"
